Our comprehensive 40 Hour Mediation Training Program equips you with the skills and knowledge to become a registered mediator on the Indiana Supreme Court's approved domestic mediation registry. You'll be empowered to guide families through separation, divorce, and other domestic issues.

Completion of this course satisfies the requirements for the Office of Admissions and Continuing Education to apply to be registered on the Supreme Court of Indiana's Domestic Relations Mediator Registry. Participants of this course shall receive 40 Hours of Continuing Mediation Education (CME), 24 Hours of Continuing Legal Education (CLE), with 6 of those hours being Ethics credit.

Our Trainers

Our program is led by Attorney Mark Roscoe, and Mediator and Immediate Past-President of the Indiana Association of Mediators, Matthew Carroll. Mark and Matt will guide you through the mediation process, skills, Indiana's ADR Rules and Law, ethical considerations, and much more.

Mark A. Roscoe, Lead Trainer

Mark Roscoe received a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology in 1980 from Valparaiso University and a Juris Doctorate Degree from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1983. He served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Porter County, Indiana from 1983 through 1986 before entering the private practice of law. Mark is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association, the Porter County Family Law Bar Association and has served on the Advisory Counsel of the Porter County's Family Court Project. He served as the Secretary of the Indiana State Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the Indiana State Bar Association in 2005 and has been a certified Family Law Mediator since the year 2000. Mr. Roscoe was named among twelve of the year’s most fascinating lawyers in 2017 by the ABA Journal. Family Law Mediation has become the primary focus of Mark’s law practice. He has successfully mediated approximately 4,000 cases over past 26 years.

In addition to Mr. Roscoe’s mediation practice, he has been actively involved in the fashion industry for the past 30 years designing couture garments for both men and women. The Mark Roscoe Make A Statement Collection has appeared at some of the most prestigious events, including the Emmy Awards, the Cannes Film Festival and the Tony Awards. Mark provided costume design for the feature film, “Dreams I Never Had” starring Robin Givens and Malcolm McDowell, as well as for the film “Hello Beautiful”, starring Tricia Helfer. Mark’s original designs open the movie and appear on the official movie poster. Mark has also designed for comedic sensation, Keegan Michael Key, for the Primetime and Technical Emmy Award shows, as well as actor and director, Sayed Badreya, for the BAFTA Awards. In 2014, Mark took home three Emmy Awards for his brand commercial, Make a Statement.

In 2019, Mark began producing and directing promotional videos for charitable organizations in the Chicagoland area. In 2020, he launched his own production company. Currently, Mark is producing and directing a video on domestic violence for the Love Purse Organization, as well as the feature film, “The Place In Between”. The movie explores the daily challenges of a couple navigating the adverse affects of
Alzheimer’s. The movie is scheduled for release in 2027.

Matthew D. Carroll, Expert Trainer

Matthew began his professional journey as a Grammy® and Emmy® Award-winning musician, enjoying an illustrious 18-year career collaborating with diverse artists worldwide. During this time, he played an active role in collective bargaining negotiations, serving as a labor negotiator for the American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), where he remains a life member for his dedicated service to the Guild. Transitioning to the field of mediation, Matthew completed certificate programs at Northwestern University in 2018 in Civil Mediation, Divorce Mediation, and Negotiation Skills. He completed an intensive Mediator Mentorship Program from the Center of Conflict Resolution in 2019 and has dedicated himself to resolving a wide range of disputes.

He is the owner of Keystone Mediation in Dyer, Indiana, where he facilitates resolutions in areas including dissolution of marriages, legal separations, parenting plans, property division, financial divisions and allocations, child support matters, couples mediation, small business conflicts, attorney/fee mediations, stalking/no contact mediations, juvenile mediations, civil and small claims mediations, and landlord/tenant disputes.

Recognizing the importance of ongoing education and professional development, Matthew has pursued various certifications and memberships. He is a Certified Practitioner with the Academy of Professional Family Mediators and a registered Parenting Coordinator with the Supreme Court of Indiana. Matthew is also deeply involved in several professional mediation organizations, currently serving as the President of the Indiana Association of Mediators and with a Special Interest Group for Couples Mediation with the Academy of Professional Family Mediators.

Matthew's commitment to the mediation profession extends beyond his practice. He is an Adjunct Lecturer at Northwestern University's School of Professional Studies, where he instructs the Divorce Mediation class and Adjunct Faculty for Aurora University where he instructs the Civil Mediation class. He also volunteers as a mediator with the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) in Chicago, Illinois, and the Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) in Bloomington, Indiana.

As a respected figure in the field, Matthew has been a sought-after guest speaker, contributing to seminars and presentations for organizations such as the American Bar Association (ABA), the Maryland Program for Mediator Excellence (MPME), the Southern California Mediation Association (SCMA), Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education (IICLE), and the Indiana Association of Mediators (IAM). He is actively involved in providing mentorship opportunities, training, and coaching to aspiring mediators.

Matthew's professional affiliations include memberships with the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), the American Bar Association (ABA), the Academy of Professional Family Mediators (APFM), the Indiana Association of Mediators (IAM), Kids Managing Conflict (KMC), and the Lake County (IN) Bar Association (LCBA). These connections allow him to stay at the forefront of developments in mediation and family law.

Beyond his professional life, Matthew is a devoted father and husband. He enjoys hiking, golfing, sports, movies, and is a staunch advocate for the arts. This multifaceted approach to life enriches his perspective and enhances his ability to connect with clients and colleagues alike.

Amy Applegate

Clinical Professor of Law and Ralph F. Fuchs Faculty Fellow Director, and Director of the Civil Protection Order Clinic, Viola J. Taliaferro Family and Children Mediation Clinic

Amy joined the faculty at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law (“Law School”) in 2001, after a career in private and government practice. In her current clinic, Applegate has introduced screening for intimate partner violence or abuse (“IPV”) with clients seeking civil protection orders. Applegate has also taught mediation theory and practice in the clinical law program that she developed at the Law School. Through this program, law students have provided mediation services to indigent and low-income litigants in disputed custody, parenting-time, and other family law cases.

Applegate has received teaching, research, and service awards for her work. She has been a leader in clinical legal education on the national level in the United States, and actively and significantly involved in state and local bar activities, with a special emphasis in the areas of family law mediation, mediation ethics, IPV screening, and delivery of pro bono services. Applegate and colleagues have conducted research on family law issues, focusing on families experiencing parental divorce or separation. She and her colleagues have tested methods of screening for a history of IPV in cases seeking family mediation, so that mediators are aware of IPV and consider the possible impact of IPV on the mediation process. In that regard, Applegate and her colleagues developed the Mediator’s Assessment of Safety Issues and Concerns (“MASIC”), and recently the shortened MASIC (“MASIC-S”), which is available online to all mediators at no cost. Applegate and colleagues have also conducted randomized controlled trials testing the effectiveness of family law interventions, including different mediation approaches (for both families with and without histories of IPV) and online parent education programs.

Applegate has co-authored many publications in her research areas. Additionally, she presented individually and with her collaborators in presentations at state, national, and international conferences about her research and practice areas.

Magistrate Mark Hardwick

Porter County Superior Court

The Hon. Mark A. Hardwick is a magistrate for the Porter County Superior Court in Indiana. He was appointed to the bench on September 11, 2018. Prior to his appointment, Hardwick was an attorney at Douglas, Koeppen & Hurley, a law firm based in Valparaiso. He specialized in family law matters including adoptions, divorces, child custody, and child support issues. He also handled estate planning, probate business, corporate, and bankruptcy cases.

Hardwick earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1990. He then completed a J.D. at Valparaiso University School of Law in 1993.

His memberships have included the Porter County Bar Association and the Indiana State Bar Association.

Jill Swope

Jill Swope is an attorney, Certified Family Law Specialist, Registered Family Law Mediator, and one of Indiana's longest-serving Parenting Coordinators. She has practiced family law for nearly 30 years and has served as a Parenting Coordinator since 2002, helping families navigate high-conflict disputes both in and out of the courtroom.

Jill is an active leader in the Indiana Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts (AFCC), where she serves on the Board of Directors, and is also a member of the Indiana State Family Law Certification Board. She regularly presents continuing legal education seminars on family law and alternative dispute resolution and has authored successful appeals before the Indiana Court of Appeals and the Indiana Supreme Court.

Kate Vena

Kate Vena MS, LMHC is a licensed clinical mental health therapist who graduated from Purdue University in 2010 with a Master of Education in Science, with a concentration in School Psychology.

She established her own mental health private practice and treatment center in 2016. Her clinical practices include individual, families, and group therapy, with a focus on communication, conflict resolution, family dynamics, and supporting children and families through complex transitions.

She developed a court-focused High-Conflict Co-Parenting Program and the Two Homes with Kids group program, designed to support families and children involved in separation and co-parenting transitions. She has extensive experience working alongside family law professionals, clients, and families. She also developed an Intensive Outpatient Program for adolescents and families ages 11-17. She values a collaborative approach to care and works closely with outside providers, schools, and other professionals involved in supporting clients and families.

Do You Qualify for This 40 Hour Mediation Training?

To ensure you qualify for this training program, the State of Indiana requires that in domestic relations cases, a registered mediator must be either: (a) an attorney, in good standing with the Supreme Court of Indiana; (b) a person who has a bachelor's degree or advanced degree from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; or (c) a person who has a bachelor’s degree or advanced degree from an international institution and provides a degree evaluation from a service recognized by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) showing the program is equivalent to a degree from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

A 40-hour mediation training requires significant time and resources to prepare, including instructor scheduling, training materials, and facility arrangements. Thank you for your understanding as this policy allows us to provide a high-quality experience for every participant.

Minimum Enrollment

A minimum of 14 registered participants is required for this training to take place. If minimum enrollment is not met, Keystone Mediation reserves the right to cancel the training up to 30 days before the scheduled start date. In the event Keystone cancels the training, all registered participants will receive a full refund.
